Summary

  1. The development of Mageia Educational (Mageia 3 Remastered Education DVD or Livecd), configured and with educational programs pre-installed, suitable for schools in general.
  2. The proposal to create a Mageia LTS (long term support) require much more structure, I do not know how make possible, so this aspect of my proposal is being excluded

Resources

  • Mageia packagers and testers interested in educational software, as well as long term support.
    • (remark of marja:) packagers interested in such software do already exist, see Edu SIG

Current status

  • Targeted release: Mageia 3
  • Last updated: August 14, 2012
  • Percentage of completion: <XX>%

Detailed Description

  1. This a proposal to improve educational programs in Mageia.
  2. The purpose of this page is to present a list of educational packages that can be imported in Mageia, or that are already in.
  3. The project could grow as follows:
    1. add missing educational programs
    2. group educational programs in specialized meta-packages (such as math, chemical, primary school, etc)
    3. build one (or more) live cd -or improve draklive specs to make it buildable- to give to schools.

Why it would be good for Mageia to include it

  1. Educational Magea be implemented in schools
  2. It will strengthen the linux as an educational tool and Mageia, which is a community distro.
  3. It will help Mageia produce a LTS release. Since the actual additional support will start with Mageia 4, this gives us time to increase our packaging and QA resources to meet this demand. If it happens that we are short of resources, we could restrict LTS to packages in the Educational release.
  4. The educational focus, along with LTS, will help Mageia and Linux in the educational sphere, which will help Mageia in the longer term. Students familiar with Linux are much more likely to continue with Linux, and be future contributors.

Test case

Anything useful for QA and all testers to help debugging during all development cycle

What could disrupt development of this new feature

  1. the missing, in the official repositories, of educational software packages.

Planning

  1. Add software packages educational in the official repository Mageia:
    1. Mageia Educational Project - Edu SIG
    2. Add in the repository Mageia, all educational software needed, like Klavaro (Touch Typing Tutor), Userful-multiplier (see Bug 6960 - it is a useful package, to be a low cost solution for educational projects), etc.
  2. Develop an distro Educational Mageia (Mageia 3 Remastered Education DVD or Livecd), configured and with educational programs pre-installed, suitable for schools in general.
  3. The version "Mageia Education" will be based on Mageia 3 (preferably, in Mageia LTS version, when it has been created, in the future).
