Quality assurance, or QA (in use from 1973) for short, is the systematic monitoring and evaluation of the various aspects of a project, service or facility to maximize the probability that minimum standards of quality are being attained by the production process. QA cannot absolutely guarantee the production of quality products.
Two principles included in QA are: "Fit for purpose", the product should be suitable for the intended purpose; and "Right first time", mistakes should be eliminated. QA includes regulation of the quality of raw materials, assemblies, products and components, services related to production, and management, production and inspection processes.
The Wikipedia description is quite accurate for our purposes. QA is a transferable skill. It can be applied across all projects and industries, including our very own project - Mageia!
In our case, the raw materials would be our applications, assemblies would be our packages, products and components would be our releases and updates, services related to production and management would be our use of Bugzilla and communication with other teams and inspection processes our own procedures and processes.
QA is a balancing act between thoroughness and necessity. Thoroughness in what we do and a desire not to allow faults to go unchecked but being mindful of the needs of others and sometimes ourselves! Leonardo da Vinci once said that art is never completed, it is merely abandoned, this also applies to quality assurance. At some point, the object under scrutiny must be released into the wild!
