The Razor-qt Desktop

Note: This page was written for Mageia 3. RazorQt is replaced with LXQt starting from Mageia 6

Razor-qt is the latest desktop to be added to the Mageia distribution. It is intended to be a fast light weight desktop similar to LXDE. What makes Razor-qt different to other light weight desktops is that it is written using the QT4 toolkit which is the same toolkit used by KDE. However Razor-qt does not depend on any of the KDE libraries and so can be a lot faster and lighter than KDE.

Razor-qt Window Manager

Razor-qt is a desktop environment (DE). It contains the functions of a DE, namely a desktop, a panel with system dock, and a Settings GUI. What is not contained in Razor-qt is a Window Manager (WM). Instead Razor-qt is able to choose which Window Manager is used. The two most popular choices are Openbox and Kwin.

  Openbox is the same WM used by LXDE and is known for being light and stable. For the fastest possible desktop use Openbox.

  Razor-qt with Kwin Window Manager with Andromeda and Dolphin File Managers
  Kwin is the KDE Window Manager. - The use of the Kwin Window Manager means that windows in Razor-qt will have the same look and feel as KDE, complete with all the 3D Window effects of KDE, but without the Plasma desktop of KDE and all the other KDE bloat like Akonadi/Nepomuk. For those users who mourn for KDE3.5 a Razor-qt desktop with Kwin and running selected KDE applications could be an attractive proposition.

Desktop Widgets

Razor-qt supports widgets to put on the desktop. These are not the same as KDE desktop plasmoids. Currently available widgets are :-

• An analogue clock,
• A desktop notepad
• A folder display area to show the contents of the Desktop folder.

Installing Razor-qt

The Razor-qt desktop may be installed either using Mageia Comtrol Centre [listed as task-razorqt], or from the command line

#urpmi task-razorqt

In the Razor-qt Configuration Centre open the Razor Session Configuration GUI and ensure the Razor Autosuspend module is enabled and running. Razor autosuspend manages the battery power icon in the system tray.

Installing the Razor-qt desktop will also install the lightdm Display Manager. Select lightdm from the Mageia Control Centre>Boot>DisplayManager menu if you wish to use it.

QT4 Applications

Qupzilla browser

Mageia bundles a number of QT4 based utilities in with the razor-qt desktop.

• Qlipper - Clipboard icon for the system tray. Similar to KDE's Klipper but without KDE dependencies.

• Andromeda - A file Manager. Andromeda is currently under development, and at the moment is not as feature rich as many other FMs. Users may prefer to use Dolphin or some other file manager.

• Arora - A web browser based on QT-Webkit - Arora is a very fast and capable browser.

• Trojitá - An IMAP email client

• JuffEd - A text editor similar to kwrite (Install juffed-plugins to increase its functionality )

• Nomacs - An image viewer

• ScreenGrab - A screen image grabber

• qBittorrent - A Bittorrent client

• Silicon - A CD/DVD burner - functional, but not as complete as K3b

• QTerminal - A console shell

The following applications are not included with the Razor-qt desktop, but being QT4 based without any KDE dependency they work very well with Razor-qt. They are all available in the Mageia repository.

• Clementine Music Player - Anyone who liked Amarok 1.4 before Amarok 2.0 will love Clementine. Clementine is the music player Amarok should have been (IMO)

• VLC - Media Player - The very popular VLC media player is QT4 based.

• Qupzilla - An alternative browser. The Arora browser bundled with razor-qt is no longer maintained. The Qupzilla browser is another QT4 browser based on QT-WebKit which is more feature rich than Arora while still being very lean and fast. Qupzilla is a very nice browser indeed and makes a good alternative to mainstream browsers.

• qpdfview - Document viewer. It supports pdf, postcript, and DjVu documents. It is very fast and well featured, and makes a great alternative to okular.

Configuring Razor-qt

Home and Wastebin Icons

Like LXDE Razor-qt does not automatically put Home and Wastebin icons on the desktop. They have to be inserted manually.

Using a file manager navigate to the ~/Desktop folder and create a file called Home.desktop containing

Your Wastebin should now be working after the Razor-qt desktop is restarted.

In these examples is has been assumed that Dolphin is the file manager used because at the moment Andromeda does not support trash:/ To use an alternative file manager edit the Exec= line.

If you use KDE on the same computer you will find that suitable .desktop files already exist. You can make them visible in both KDE and Razor-qt by editing them and changing the line.
