Background

We started using Matrix in September 2023, but there is no official decision to move from IRC to Matrix. At the moment, both are being used by us and it is expected that we will continue do so for the foreseeable future.

Creating a Matrix account

• Go to https://app.element.io/#/welcome

• Click on "Create Account"

• Insert a Username, Password (2x) and Email-address

• Do what is requested in the confirmation mail

Signing in

After creating an account, it can be hard to sign in. It might take a while.

• You can sign in using your browser, at https://app.element.io/#/welcome

• or you can sign in with a dedicated application (For instance NeoChat or Nheko, which are both available in the Mageia repositories. Note though December 2024 for Nheko on Mageia 9: mga#32965, mga#33324, mga#33563 - but the Flatpak of Nheko works.) Or use the Element application - for Mageia use Flatpak, see top right of this page for install command.

When signing in, your homeserver (e.g. matrix.org) should:

• either be in a separate field & not be in light grey letters. If it is light grey you need to type over it, so it becomes dark.
• or be appended to your username, e.g.: "username:matrix.org"

Warning

Everything you say or upload in one of our Matrix rooms, will be saved "for ever". However, it is possible to edit or delete a post.
