This page is designed to be a quick introduction to the LXDE desktop which will enable you to create a basic setup from which you can go on to explore its features more fully.

Configuring LXDE
This is how your LXDE desktop will appear the first time you use it. There are several ways of changing this setup to suit your preferences.

Background and wallpaper

If you installed LXDE from "Install & Remove Software", you will have shortcut icons for the Wastebin and your home folder on the desktop (not if you installed it directly from the DVD - see below). These can be deleted by right-clicking on them and selecting "Delete". If you want to add application shortcuts to the desktop, simply right-click on the menu entry for each application and click "Add to desktop". You can change the background settings by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting "Desktop Preferences". To change the wallpaper, click the icon shown with a red circle in the screenshot below, which will enable you to browse your folders for a suitable image. If you change the wallpaper and want to revert to the default image later, you will find it in the folder |

Adding Home and Wastebin Icons to the Desktop
Mageia 2 does not put Home and Wastebin icons on the desktop automatically if you install LXDE direct from the DVD, but it is very easy to add them yourself:
- Right-click on the desktop and select Create New > Blank File . Give the file the name Home.desktop
- An icon named Home will appear on the desktop. Right click on it and select Leafpad to open it. (Or another editor of your choice)
- Copy this text into Leafpad and Save.

Panels

You are given one bottom panel by default, but it is easy to add and delete panels by right-clicking on a panel and choosing "Create New Panel" or "Delete This Panel". The Panel Settings sub-menu gives various configuration options.

Adding, removing and editing panel items can be done from either Panel Settings or Add/Remove Panel Items. Some panel items can be edited, including:
- Spacers - panel items are by default separated by spacers 2 or 4 pixels wide, but if you like your items more widely spaced than that, just click "Edit" against each spacer and you can increase its width.
- Application launchers - Mageia provides by default one application launcher with icons for four applications, but you can have as many or as few applications per launcher as you wish. If you like to have panel items widely spaced, you can have several application launchers on a panel, each containing just one application icon.
The example below shows a desktop with two panels and an assortment of items on each panel:

Configuration tools
Other ways to configure LXDE can be found in the menus, which are accessed by clicking on the Mageia icon on the left of the panel. The Tools menu provides a number of sub-menus for configuring various aspects of the desktop, in particular Customise Look and Feel and Openbox Configuration Manager (Openbox is the default window manager used with LXDE).
Auto starting Applications
In LXDE there are two ways of causing applications to start when you log in.
- In your home directory is a hidden folder called .config create a file in there called autostart if it does not already exist. For each application you want to start at login, add a line to that file with the format @application . For example
@mozilla-firefox
- The directory /etc/xdg/autostart contains .desktop files for applications to be started at login. This is where Mageia defines which applications should start for each type of desktop. Copying a .desktop file into this directory will cause that application to be started for all users of the computer.
Recommended Applications
With a light weight desktop like LXDE it makes sense to use light weight applications with it.
Here are some applications and utilities Mageia users have found useful with LXDE.
Parcellite Clipper
LXDE does not have its own Clipper application. Parcellite which is the Gnome clipper works very well with LXDE. After installing the parcellite package you will find Parcellite in the LXDE menu at Menu>Tools>Parcellite. When it is started you will see the Parcellite icon appear in the LXDE system Tray.
Installing Parcellite will put a .desktop file into /etc/xdg/autostart so it will start automatically when you login to LXDE
Right-clicking on parcellite will allow you to set Preferences. Enabling the 'Copy (Control C), 'Primary Selection', and 'Synchronize' options will enable you to copy text to the clipboard using both Windows style (Control C), and Linux style (highlight with the mouse) copying. Pasting can be by Windows style (Control V), or Linux style (press mouse wheel button)
