Current status

  • Targeted release: Mageia 3 or earlier
  • Last updated: 2012/06/17
  • Percentage of completion: unknown %, but a lot is already in place.

Detailed Description

Want all disk tools to fully support GPT, including at least :

  • Formating or reformating a disk with a GPT partition table
  • Creating or deleting partitions on a disk with a GPT partition table
  • Modifying a partition on a disk with a GPT partition table
  • Being able to perform the above 3 functions on a disk with a hybrid partition table, as described on the gdisk site http://www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/hybrid.html
Basically this requires properly recognizing such a disk as a GPT partitioned disk.
  • The installer(s) being able to support all of the previous 4 situations.
  • Any other aspect of interreacting with a GPT disk.

Note that some of these features are at least partly supported, but not all. Simply reading or writing to a partition on a GPT disk seems to work properly.

Why it would be good for Mageia to include it

GPT disk partitioning format, besides being the default on newer EFT systems, is much more secure than the older MBR partitioning format, which must daisy-chain more than 4 partitions.

Test case

Attempt each function with every disk tool and the installer, preferably on partitions not containing valuable data.
