Detailed Description

I quote from Ximion's blog "AppStream is a cross-distro effort for building Software-Center-like Software Center applications. It contains stuff like a screenshot-service, ratings&reviews etc. The most important component is a Xapian database, storing information about all available applications in the distribution’s repositories. The Xapian DB is distro-agnostik, but distributors need to provide data to fill it. AppStream offers an application-centric way to look at a package database"

Ubuntu Software Center, Mint Software Manager, Google Play Store, Apple's AppStore, and AppStream are all a very easy ways to install software, more user friendly than package managers. We can ship a Software Center that is better than we do now, and for 2014, I think this is a must.

Why it would be good for Mageia to include it

A modern Software Center should make Mageia easier to use and more compelling for the new comers and old users alike.

Test case

Software / Packages Dependencies

  • Fix urpmi-backagekit backend
  • Or implementing RethinkingOurPackageManager feature

What could disrupt development of this new feature

  • The PackageKit backend is not fixed, may not be fixed at all and maybe RethinkingOurPackageManager will not be accepted.

Planning

Contingency

Do not ship it.
